Chocolate that promotes dental health?
Updated: 12/5/2008 11:25:38 AM

Chocolate that promotes dental health? The maker of a new line of chocolate bars claims that its products will not damage a person's dental health.

Belgian chocolate makers Daskalides and Chocolaterie Smet have announced the release of tooth-friendly chocolates also approved by an international nonprofit devoted to promoting dental hygiene.

Instead of sugar, the products contain isomaltulose - a natural sugar which is resistant to decomposition by oral bacteria, thereby avoiding a situation in which the mouth's acidity level is raised.

The level of acidity in the human mouth is critical for maintaining dental health. When pH levels fall too low and acidity increases, the risk of developing cavities is elevated.

"The new product represents the ideal marriage between enjoyment and health," explained Edward Geldof of Daskalides. "More and more of our customers actively search for products which combine these two properties seamlessly."

Some other sweet treats on the market already claim that they promote dental health. Last year, scientists said they had developed a lollipop that helped fight cavities, while several chewing gums also boast dental care properties.

The American Dental Association has even awarded certain gums its seal of acceptance.
