People suffering from gum disease may benefit from a laser treatment designed to minimize pain by avoiding cutting or stitching at the same time as improving dental health.
LANAP, or Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, is an FDA-approved treatment which removes diseased tissue from around the teeth without damaging healthy sections of gum.
One in three Americans over 35 reportedly suffers from inflammation of the gum - or periodontitis - of some form, which can lead to tooth loss or in some cases an increased risk of stroke or cardiac arrest.
Denver-based periodontist Dr. Charles Barotz recently started providing the procedure to his patients.
According to Barotz, the emergence of LANAP reduces the need for multiple visits to the clinic for his patients.
"With the LANAP treatment, there is no cutting or suturing, which in turn means much less discomfort," he stated.
"The procedure can be done in one to two visits with two follow-up visits. LANAP has done to gum surgery what Lasik has done for eye surgery," he maintained.
