Many women may not realize it, but dental care is an important part of keeping themselves healthy while they are pregnant.
West Virginian dentist Dr Maria Bernardo told the Charleston Gazette that maintaining proper dental health will benefit both mother and child.
"During pregnancy, the teeth and gums are more prone to bacteria. If you have bacteria, it's going to pass to the fetus," she explained.
Meanwhile, other women who are aware of the importance of dental care still may choose not to visit a dentist when they are expecting due to high dental costs or problems with dental insurance.
Some programs in West Virginia have been set up to better meet the state's needs for providing affordable dental care for pregnant women, the publication states.
The importance of this initiative has received significant attention following recent studies, which link poor dental health to premature delivery and underweight babies.
Women who are looking for a way to save money on dental care may want to consider discount dental plans. An alternative to dental insurance, these plans provide discounts of between 10 and 60 percent on most dental procedures.
