Dentists can advise about at-home teeth whitening treatments

Dentists can advise about at-home teeth whitening treatments The desire to have a pearly white smile is nothing new, but recently more teeth whitening products have come onto the market that can help people achieve results at home rather than the dentist's office.

Some at-home products are given out by dentists and have the American Dental Association seal of approval. Meanwhile, others are available over-the-counter.

Bleaching solutions are available in a variety of different concentrations of carbamide perioxide, including 10 percent, 16 percent and 22 percent, according to the ADA.

These teeth whitening agents are often sold in gel form and placed in a mouthguard to be used for a specified amount of time. Patients can either purchase a standard mouthguard or have their dentist make one that is custom-fitted for their teeth and bite.

The ADA recommends that people who experience tooth sensitivity or other side affects while using teeth whitening formulas should contact their dentist if they are concerned.

Additionally, the American Dental Hygienists Association warns people against using bleaching agents too frequently, as they may risk damaging their tooth enamel.
