Parents keen to improve their child's smile through the appropriate dental care procedures are increasingly feeling the pinch of the economic downturn.
That's according to Dr Dean Murphy, an orthodontist in Rockford, who reportedly told WIFR.com that times were getting tougher for orthodontic practices and their clients in the Illinois city.
Trade was down approximately 6 percent over the past half year, he told the news provider.
And he suggested that parents' dental insurance often didn't pass muster when it came to securing affordable braces and other orthodontic procedures for their children.
"It's one of our gripes in orthodontics [that] they've capped orthodontic coverage or even dental coverage for the last 30 years at about a thousand dollar deductible," he was quoted as saying.
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, most orthodontic patients will commence treatment between ages 9 and 14.
However, an increasing number of adults - almost two-thirds female - are now opting for the treatment, often choosing clear or tooth-colored braces to reduce the visual effect they have on their smile.
Most orthodontic treatments last between one and three years and are designed to straighten teeth or improve jaw alignment, the AAO states.
