Mini-implants prompt dental care questions

Mini-implants prompt dental care questions The use of mini-dental implants has been growing because they are less expensive and require less treatment time than traditional implants, according to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry.

However, the AAID has also raised concerns about the amount of training received by professionals who use mini-implants - which are smaller than their conventional counterparts and require a less invasive procedure.

"Dentists need to be well versed in implant dentistry before using mini implants," commented former AAID president Kim Gowey.

"Without extensive implant knowledge, they will not know proper surgical techniques and all the basics about bone healing critical for implant success."

Implants are already widely used by dentists to stabilize dentures, as well as for crown and bridge applications.

Speaking at a recent meeting of the AAID, dentist Dr Todd Shatkin spoke in favor of mini-implants, saying that the FDA has already approved some systems, while research has reported a 95 percent success rate for mini-implants.

Around 3 million Americans have dental implants and that number grows by around 500,000 each year, according to the AAID.
