Preventing tooth decay and other dental health problems among kids who cannot afford dental care - or who do not have dental insurance - can be a challenge.
However, there are some programs in place that aim to help improve the dental health of disadvantaged families. For example, Michigan children from low-income families are able to potentially improve their dental health by undergoing a free fluoride treatment.
The Grand Rapids Press reports that around 8,000 children in the state will receive a total of 17,000 varnish applications at no cost from the Michigan Department of Community health this fiscal year.
During application, a topical varnish is applied to the surface of teeth to prevent new cavities and stop existing cavities from worsening.
Fluoride from the varnish is released onto tooth enamel over the course of many months, in order to strengthen teeth.
"Tooth decay can easily be prevented with proper care, but many of Michigan's children do not have access to this care and develop dental disease early in life," Janet Olszewsk of MDCH told the news provider.
Fluoride is added to the drinking water in many areas of the U.S. as a measure to further protect children's dental health.
