Kids get sealants to protect their dental health

Kids get sealants to protect their dental health A number of children in Le Grande, Oregon recently received a procedure that will help protect their dental health for years to come.

As part of a post-Halloween dental care event, 75 kids received free dental sealants at the ODS College of Dental Sciences, the Observer reports.

Dental sealants are plastic materials applied to the depressions and grooves of the chewing surfaces of back teeth, particularly the molars.

They protect dental health by working as a barrier to protect enamel from plaque and acids that can lead to tooth decay.

Before their sealants were applied, the children underwent a dental checkup to ensure they would be good candidates for the procedure. Dental hygienists also x-rayed their affected teeth to make sure they did not already have a cavity.

"We want to get the word out about our school and the different services we provide," dental hygiene student Michelle Larson told the news provider.

The school also provides teeth cleaning and x-ray services to children and veterans.
