The frequency with which a person consumes acidic food has a bigger impact on their amount of tooth decay than the amount of that food consumed, it has been suggested.
An article in the Zanesville Times Recorder describes how eating a very large chocolate bar in one sitting is actually preferable - in terms of dental health - to snacking on small mints throughout the day.
This is because the acids in these foods may upset the pH balance of the mouth and require a period of two hours before the acids can be neutralized. If, after that time, further sugars and starches are consumed, the process will begin again.
The article also advises that people may want to chew gum that contains the ingredient xylitol after finishing a meal as part of their dental care routine.
Chewing gum boosts the amount of saliva produced in the mouth, which will help fight bacteria. In addition, xylitol does not produce acid like many other sweeteners.
Recently, Dr Mark Hildahl told KFYR-TV that parents should look out for sour candies during the Halloween season, as these have low pH levels and high amounts of tooth-damaging acids.
