Children may be used to hearing about the benefits of good dental hygiene from their parents and dentist, but now a popular Sesame Street character has added his voice to the mix.
Elmo is the star of a new book that is being promoted by the American Dental Association, called Ready, Set Brush!
The Muppet joins friends including Cookie Monster and the Count to help educate youngsters on dental care habits such as brushing their teeth.
Young readers can even interact with the book by using a cutout brush to clean Marvin Monster's teeth and spinning a wheel to determine how much toothpaste Elmo should use.
Dr Kimberly Harms, ADA consumer advisor, said that parents who give the book to their children will be exerting a positive influence on their dental health.
"This book is designed to help parents teach the importance of oral health in a fun way," she added.
Meanwhile, Jeanette Betancourt of Sesame Workshop said that such efforts will help children "establish lifelong habits" to improve their dental health.
The American Dental Association recommends that kids begin using a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste at the age of two and avoid swallowing it after brushing.
