Dentists are trained to help their patients feel as comfortable as possible while they are receiving dental care and many offer a variety of options for easing anxiety.
For example, some patients find that conscious sedation dentistry - administered either orally or intravenously - can help calm their fears.
New Jersey dentist Dr Jerry Strauss explained how he uses sedation to relax patients while he performs various procedures.
Dr Strauss said that it is "imperative" for dentist and patient to "develop a trusting relationship" to enhance the treatment.
As an additional feature, his practice offers spa treatments such as paraffin hand baths to those who would like to combine a day at the spa with dental care. Patients also have the opportunity to use a massage chair and sip refreshments in front of a fireplace.
The American Dental Association describes conscious sedation as a method by which patients achieve a relaxed state but can still respond to speech or touch.
"Understanding the range of choices that are available to relieve anxiety and discomfort makes you a well-informed dental consumer," the ADA advises.
