The technology used to straighten teeth has been growing increasingly more advanced, encouraging more people to investigate their orthodontic options, a report in USA Today suggests.
It describes how SureSmile braces cut down on the amount of time needed to straighten teeth, which may appeal to adults who do not want to commit to traditional orthodontics. Traditional braces are worn for around 24 months.
The braces work using Shape Memory Alloy wires, which are customized to fit a patient's mouth. Dentists and orthodontists use 3D imaging to create a plan for the treatment.
"You're literally moving the teeth around in a virtual world, placing them in the perfect position," orthodontist Bruce Goldstein told the publication. "It takes the guesswork out of it."
SureSmart CEO Charles Abraham claims that his product can reduce the time a patient spends in braces by 40 percent. He says that 30,000 people have undergone this treatment since 2004.
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, one in five people with braces is 18 or older and 63 percent are female.
Discount dental plans can help individuals save between 10 and 60 percent on most dental procedures.
