A new pre-brushing mouth rinse has been introduced that temporarily tints children's teeth blue, with the aim of piquing their interest in dental care.
Listerine Agent Cool Blue is free from alcohol and is aimed at kids aged six and up. It is available in two flavors - Glacier Mint and Bubble Blast.
First, children rinse with the mouthwash, which uses blue coloring to highlight areas in which plaque is present. That helps them know where they should concentrate their efforts when they brush.
Commenting on the product launch, pediatric dentist Dr Kaneta R Lott said that it could aid parents' efforts to promote dental health by providing kids with "a sense of accomplishment."
"Children's formative years are an important time to teach healthy habits and set the foundation for good oral health," Lott added.
Kids should visit a dentist every six months, according to the American Dental Association's recommendations.
Families who are trying to save money on trips to the dentist may be interested in exploring discount dental plans, which offer potential savings of 10 to 60 percent on most procedures.
