A laser-based treatment for gum disease may offer an alternative to traditional surgeries that use scalpels and sutures to access the roots of teeth.
The Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) is aimed at clearing away tissue afflicted by gum disease without cutting or stitching.
LANAP, which takes place under local anesthesia, involves a very small laser fiber which is placed between the tooth and the gum to clean the area of tartar and plaque. Following this measure, a different laser setting creates a blood clot to close off the pocket.
The procedure can be performed by dentists, while conventional surgery usually requires the skills of a periodontist.
Dr Mike Hood of the Arizona Center For Cosmetic & Restorative Dentistry explained that he believes LANAP will improve the level of dental care he offers patients who suffer from the condition.
"By reducing post-operative pain, the number of sessions required and the recovery time, LANAP eliminates many of the reasons that so many patients hesitate to seek treatment for periodontal disease," he commented.
Periodontal disease is caused when the bacteria in plaque becomes inflamed, which damages the teeth and gums.
