A personalized approach should be taken with teeth whitening, a cosmetic and reconstructive dentist has claimed.
Dr Charles Crane explained that he has been using a pre-procedure interview to help determine which method is most effective for the individual patient.
One of the factors that influence the decision is the shade of the staining. For example, Crane's research has determined that in-office systems are an effective way to whitened yellow-stained teeth.
In contrast, brown stains may be better suited to deep bleaching, a process that takes place over a number of different sessions.
Gray-colored teeth may not see good results from teeth whitening, Crane added, suggesting that porcelain veneers or bonding may be a better alternative.
In addition to tooth shade, during the interview Crane talks to patients about their budget and desired outcome.
"This interview is meant to increase the amount of success we see and decrease the chances that patients will have to try several failed avenues before seeing results," he explained.
Nearly three-quarters (74 percent) of Americans believe an unattractive smile could damage a person's career success, according to a survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
