An increasing body of research and media coverage has emphasized the value of preventive dental care.
Now, a new oral health campaign set to be introduced by the California Dental Association this month will emphasize steps that can be taken to thwart problems before they begin.
The Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) approach seeks to encourage dentists to look at a wide variety of factors as part of a regular checkup.
For example, they may seek information on the patient's diet, medications, family history and previous dental work to create a more holistic picture of risk.
Jon Roth, executive director of the CDA Foundation, said that the effort represents "a tremendous step in the direction of preventive care."
"In addition to regular dental checkups and cleanings, which are an essential part of any healthy oral health care regimen, CAMBRA provides extra resources for combating oral disease before it can occur," he commented.
Findings from previous research have suggested that preventive dental care can be particularly beneficial for the health of young children and can help prevent problems later in life.
