The importance of dental care cannot be overstated, as anyone who has suffered from a cavity, gum disease or similar condition can attest.
In order to draw further attention to the vital role that oral health plays in our lives, the American Dental Association has partnered with the FDI World Dental Federation to launch World Oral Health Day.
The event, which takes place on September 12th, is aimed at raising awareness of the effects of tooth, mouth and gum problems on general wellbeing.
Dr Burton Conrad, FDI president, said that a total of 191 member associations will be joining together to celebrate the inaugural World Oral Health Day.
"The dentists of the world are committed to helping each and every one in achieving optimal oral health through prevention and the highest possible standard of care," he commented.
Meanwhile, ADA president Dr Mark J. Feldman emphasized how "dental disease and suffering" can be reduced through preventive measures.
Recently, the FDI took part in a study of fluoride availability and cost in countries around the world. It hopes to increase access to this valuable method of preventing tooth decay.
