Having a dental hygienist who is certified to give injections benefits the patient, the dentist and the worker herself, it has been claimed.
Dental hygienist L. Teal Mercer told the News-Times that handing over this responsibility to hygienists "saves everyone time."
"The patient no longer needs to wait around for the dentist - who may be busy with other patients - to come in," she explained.
At the same time, hygienists benefit from "more autonomy," the opportunity to tackle a new challenge, and an additional skill to offer their sector.
It has been mandatory since 2007 for dental hygienists in Connecticut to receive their certification to administer local anesthesia, the publication states.
Meanwhile, those who do not already have this skill may learn how to give an injection by attending a three-day, 28-hour class.
In 2005, the Connecticut Dental Hygiene Practice Act was amended to permit hygienists to administer local anesthesia.
Dental hygienists must be licensed by the state they wish to practice in and pass a written and clinical examination.
