Tooth Taxi promotes child dental care
Updated: 8/29/2008 12:00:38 PM

A colorful van known as the Tooth Taxi is travelling Oregon with the aim of improving children's dental health.

Onboard are full-time pediatric dentist and volunteer assistants, along with equipment that allows them to perform a variety of procedures, such as cleanings, x-rays and minor oral surgery.

Funded by the Dental Foundation of Oregon, the van visited 39 counties across the state and Washington during 2007.

Mary Daly, program manager of the Tooth Taxi, told OPB News that the vehicle has been designed to be "kid-friendly" and approachable.

"We try to make it a positive experience for them with the monitors, so they can watch DVDs while they're receiving treatment - that makes them at ease and makes them more comfortable," she explained.

Among the ways children can maintain good dental health include brushing twice a day, flossing daily and visiting a dentist twice a year.
