New system for teeth whitening
Updated: 8/26/2008 6:00:18 PM

A new teeth-whitening system using red and blue light emitting diodes (LED) has been introduced for use by the dental industry.

BAKS Incorporated's BriteWhite Medical is based on another of the company's products, already available in spas, which utilizes laser, plasma light, halogen and ultraviolet to remove discoloration from teeth.

However, while the spa system uses blue LED, the new system also includes red LED for additional patient benefit, the firm says.

"Blue LED whitens teeth and kills black bacteria that cause periodontal disease," explains Joyce Osborn, president and CEO of BEKS Incorporated. "Adding red LED to the BriteWhite Medical provides treatment that will boost healing after surgery."

The company claims that patients’ teeth can benefit from up to 11 shades of increased whiteness within a 12-minute period.

A patent and clearance by the Food and Drug Administration are currently pending.

In-office bleaching, at-home bleaching and using specialized toothpaste are three teeth-whitening approaches noted by the American Dental Association on their webpage.
