Questions about whether the mercury contained in millions of dental fillings is safe are by no means answered, a story in U.S. News and World Report suggests.
The Food and Drug Administration is currently investigating a possible link between silver amalgam fillings - which contain around 50 percent mercury - and neurological or kidney problems, particularly in children and pregnant women.
However, at least two large-scale studies conducted in the past two years have found no harmful effects from the dental fillings, the publication states.
"We've looked at silver amalgams harder than any other filling material and there's just no evidence that it harms any of the sensitive groups," commented spokesperson for the American Dental Association J. Rodway Mackert.
Dentists who do not want to use silver amalgam fillings often choose composite resin, which attaches to the tooth within the cavity.
According to the ADA, composite resin fillings take longer to place than silver amalgams and may also be prone to discoloration over time.
