Cosmetic dentistry is big business at the moment, with many people opting for braces, bleaching, veneers and polishes in the quest for the perfect smile.
Now, it looks like gums may be set to get the same treatment. WBCSTV spoke to periodontist Dr Joseph Zelig, who noted that many people have problems with their gums lines being uneven, asymmetrical or disproportional.
As a result, a laser treatment has been developed to allow for a quick and easy procedure to lift the gum line.
"There's minimal to no bleeding. There's no discomfort to the patient. There's very often no stitches needed," Dr Zelig said.
He added that "the gums are the frame around the teeth just like a frame around a picture".
Lasers are also now used for dental bone surgery, with sound waves replacing scalpels.
WECT 6 Wilmington reported that sound waves cut through bone at 60,000 cycles per second, avoiding soft tissues, nerves, or blood vessels.
