New three-dimensional dental X-rays are enabling dentists to diagnose a range of ailments that previously they may not have been able to.
WBIR.com spoke to dentist Dr William Davidson, who predicted that such X-rays will be the future of dentistry.
He recalled a recent patient of his who had a tooth extracted and opted for a 3D X-ray to see if it was healing properly as "this technology gives us information that we wouldn't see in a normal examination".
The X-ray also revealed that she had a chronic sinus condition, something which would not necessarily been seen otherwise.
Dr Davidson noted that 3D X-rays can also be used to plan and practice implant surgery in advance, see into the throat and through bone and detect oral cancer and cysts.
Despite all this, at an average of $350 per scan, it is significantly cheaper than a catscan at a hospital, which costs between $800 and $1,000.
In related news, dentists began using a new tool called a VELscope earlier this year, which allows for much more effective screening for oral cancer.
