No one can foresee a dental emergency, but a bit of preparation can help ensure the injury is treated quickly and effectively.
Writing in the Statesman Journal, Marcine Hays, patient education coordinator at Oak Park Family Dental Care, suggested that a dental first aid kit can be indispensible in the case of an accident.
Although these kits may be purchased online, she suggested that people may prefer to make their own by assembling a collection of useful items.
Some of the recommended inclusions in a dental first aid kit are latex gloves, clove oil for relieving pain, tweezers, a dental mirror, gauze, petroleum jelly and dental floss.
Other items, such as denture repair products or dental wax for braces, may depend on an individual's particular needs.
Ms Hays advised that these remedies should not be seen as a substitute for a visit to the dentist and also advised that people keep their provider's phone number in their first aid kit for easy access.
Earlier this month, a report in Reader's Digest stressed the importance of seeing a dentist in the case of a tooth infection, which may have serious consequences.
