Mall kiosks providing dental whitening are popping up all over the country offering affordable and convenient treatments, but experts are warning that the standards may not be up-to-scratch.
The price tags are certainly tempting - where a dentist will typically charge $500 for teeth whitening, most mall kiosks offer treatment for around $100 - but the costs could add up later on.
Dr Alex Parker, director of North Carolina's Dental Society, warned that there is a higher risk of infection at kiosks due to a lack of running water and suggested that employees have neither the appropriate training nor the facilities to provide follow-up care, WRAL reported.
In addition, in the majority of states the firms offering such treatments do not need a license to operate, a situation which some industry groups have criticized.
Speaking to WRAL, Dr. Rebecca King, head of North Carolina's Division of Oral Health, said: "These are not regulated and I think the bottom line is buyer beware."
