Swiss firm Novel Biocare has launched a new dental implant, called NobelActive.
Designed in conjunction with experienced clinicians, the innovative treatment opens the possibility of implant therapy for more people.
Unlike traditional self-tapping implants, NobelActive uses its unique tip and double-variable thread design to condense bone during insertion.
This allows for good initial implant stability, which may help to limit the need for uncomfortable, costly and time-consuming procedures for implant patients such as bone grafting, according to the company.
It claims that the apical drilling blades and bone-condensing function of the implants allow experienced dentists to change direction during insertion, "thereby facilitating the aesthetic restoration process".
Novel Biocare conducted an eight-month pre-launch of NobelActive with 2,000 experienced clinicians, which it said elicited a positive response.
In addition, it is currently running three consecutive prospective multi-center studies, involving more than 300 patients.
In related news, Dr Jack DeGrado of the Stamford Dental Group recently told the Stamford Times that a new technology known as mini-implants could provide a simpler and less expensive way to achieve the same effects as traditional dental implants.
