It is a sentence that most people would not expect to hear - 'chewing gum can help prevent cavities in children'.
However, an article in the Journal of Clinical Dentistry prepared by Ortek Therapeutics and Stony Brook University is claiming just that, in a report on a new product called BasicMints.
BasicMints contain CaviStat, a fluoride-free, cavity-fighting complex. It is designed to copy the cavity-fighting benefits of saliva, which neutralizes plaque acids and promotes the remineralization of the tooth structure.
In a study, the children who used BasicMints for a year had 62 per cent fewer cavities in their molars than the children in the placebo group.
Doctor Israel Kleinberg, inventor of the CaviStat technology and founding chairman of the Department of Oral Biology and Pathology at SBU School of Dental Medicine, said: "This study shows for the first time that this new fluoride-free, cavity-fighting tool has the potential to significantly improve the oral health of children."
A recent report in the Modesto Bee newspaper revealed that 11 per cent of children screened in Stanislaus County, California, had cavities serious enough to impair their ability to eat.
