Oral and dental health and its role in more general health issues is the subject of a new book by a dental care professional.
The online book, Healthy Mouth, Healthy Sex! has been launched by Helaine Smith, DMD, looking at issues such as how gum disease can negatively affect pregnant women and the rise of STDs and throat cancer.
"Research has proven that untreated periodontal disease can cause low birth-weight babies and even miscarriages - yet women still do not know they should visit a dentist before getting pregnant in order to ensure they have healthy teeth and gums," Dr Smith said.
YouTube videos and podcasts have also been developed by Dr Smith in order to make oral and dental health information more widely accessible for members of the public.
Dr Smith added that there is now a "revolutionary understanding" of the importance of ensuring dental and oral health among the scientific community and a need to maintain vigilance when it comes to preventing issues such as throat cancer.
Earlier this year, the Boston-based dentist began offering a new diagnostic tool which aims to detect oral cancer at an early stage. Oral cancer in this sense covers cancer of the mouth, sinuses and throat.
