An endodontist has encouraged competitors in contact sports to wear the required protection to ensure their dental health, according to reports.
Dr Steven Fegan, a Port Huron-based endodontist has said that players of contact sport should wear mouthguards to protect their teeth and gums.
"Anyone who is competing in a contact sport should absolutely wear a mouth guard to cushion and protect their teeth from injuries. People who play contact sports can be bumped or elbowed, which could cause trauma to the teeth," he told the Times-Herald.
He added that another problem he sees among patients is from when they play basketball or hockey in their back yards and fail to protect their dental health by failing to wear the correct mouth protection.
Dr Fegan urged sports players to where the appropriate protection "every time they step out there", offering that players and coaches often do not immediately realise the damage that has been caused when someone takes a blow to the mouth.
The newspaper article recites tales on a number of players on school or college teams where people would have benefited greatly from wearing a mouthguard.
One player, Max Werner, was told he would have only suffered a concussion rather than splitting his head open if he had worn such protection, according to the paper.
April is National Face Protection Month, with the American Association of Orthodontists calling on sports players to wear mouthguards and "play it safe".
