The connection between dental health and diabetes was highlighted recently by a financial gift from DentistryForDiabetics to the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
Founder of DentistryForDiabetics Dr. Charles Martin presented a check for $10,000 to help the ADA pay for educational programs to teach people about the link between the two areas.
Diabetic people are twice as likely to develop gum disease as people without the condition and gum disease makes it more likely that a pre-diabetic will develop full diabetes.
Dr. Martin said that improving dental health can help to improve the diabetic condition. "The sad truth is the majority of diabetics and pre-diabetics dont understand the importance of the connection between their dental health and their diabetic health," he said.
Some 21 million people in the US are diabetic, Dr Martin added, and 1.5 million more a diagnosed each year, which makes educating people about the condition and dental health "critical".
Several recent studies have also suggested that poor dental health can have an effect of heart health, potential increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
