Enamel hypoplasia a concern for children
Updated: 3/4/2008 4:05:23 PM

When children have a lack of enamel, their growing teeth can become vulnerable to cavities and leave them at risk of poor dental health in the future.

Called enamel hypoplasia, the condition can occur in varying degrees, with some people having a lack of enamel on a small portion of a single tooth or all the enamel could be missing from all of the teeth.

White, yellow or brown spots on their teeth could be noticeable with a rough or pitted surface and in some cases the quality of the enamel is affected, not just the appearance.

Dental surgeon Mark Raab in Atlantic County, Washington said that between five and ten percent of his patients are affected by enamel hypoplasia and said the condition can affect baby teeth and adult teeth.

He said that waiting for teeth to fall out instead of having them fixed could lead to life-long problems.

"Back baby teeth hold the space open for permanent teeth. So if you lose them or other baby teeth due to decay," he said, "you can lose the space where the tooth was."

Research from the University of Iowa has claimed it is difficult to pinpoint a cause for enamel hypoplasia in children but that environmental and genetic factors can have an impact on whether someone will have the condition. Poor pre-natal and post-natal nutrition and any infections during pregnancy or infancy are some of the ways in which a child could be at a higher risk for having a lack of enamel.
