One teacher decided she would find a way for her students to learn about better dental health after she realized one of her second-grade students had half of a molar missing.
Linda Kaufman said that 51 million school hours are lost each year in the U.S. because of dental-related illness and that students had trouble concentrating, experience pain and even lose sleep because of dental issues.
The Reach Out America Dental program was soon started that involved practicing dentist Dr. Mollie Day visiting several elementary schools in the area periodically throughout the year.
Dr. Day also works with district registered nurse Cherie Chambers and since the program started, 109 students have been seen at the Franklin Smith school alone, with similar numbers addressed at the other elementary schools.
Ms. Chambers said: "Children really enjoy it. Some are afraid, but most are not. There are some children that are just so excited to be seeing the dentist. This is a great program."
