Periodontist Dr. David Goteiner has added to the body of science that has claimed that people who have poor dental health also have an increased risk for heart health problems.
Dr. Goteiner's study looked at 137 patients who were brought in to New Jersey's Morristown Memorial Hospital's emergency department for heart attacks or angina and found that those with acute coronary syndrome and angina were also more likely to have poorer oral care, fewer teeth and bone loss or loss of support as a result of periodontis or gum disease.
Studying the effects of oral health for almost one decade, Mr. Goteiner had his study published in the Journal of Periodontology.
Senior vice president of science and professional affairs for the American Dental Association (ASA), said that the study "is an indication that relationships between oral health and general health do exist" and that it was "imperative" for people to take their oral hygiene seriously.
Dr. Goteiner said meanwhile that "poor dental care, or a lack of it, may be associated with a cardiac event".
