The American Dental Association (ADA) has designated February as the National Children's Dental Health Month and part of its program is to ensure that children in need receive dental care in the Give Kids A Smile Campaign (GKAS).
Part of the campaign provides an estimated half million children with oral exams, preventative and restorative care and oral health education.
One part of the country that has benefited from the campaign is Long Island, where 1,700 children in local schools received free dental screenings and oral hygiene training as well as a DNA-containing tooth print to take home.
The GKAS event was coordinated by Dr. Michael Shreck, who said that volunteers for the one-day event included dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, clerical staff, dental assisting and hygiene students, local high school students and family and friends.
Dr. Shreck said at the aviation museum where the event was held: "How cool is it for kids to have their first dental visit in an aviation museum? We hope this makes it a really positive experience for them that they won't forget and will carry with them."
In recognition of the month, the ADA is asking parents to encourage healthy dental habits with their children and to help check that their youngsters are following a good dental routine.
