While it's important for all individuals to practice proper dental care, it's particularly important to instill good dental health habits in children. If kids learn to brush and floss at a young age, then hopefully they will continue to do so as adults and will have healthy teeth for life. Recently, the Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California (USC) received a grant to help them extend dental care to disadvantaged young people in the community.
According to an article published in the Daily Trojan, USC's student newspaper, the grant will go toward helping outreach workers educate children on the importance of dental health and gauge what the oral care needs of Southern California's children are.
"If we can give families with young children information about oral health and help them locate dental homes, we can use education and prevention to stop disease before it starts instead of repairing the damage," Roseann Mulligan, associate dean for Community Health Programs and Hospital Affairs at the Ostrow School, told the Daily Trojan.
According to the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy, low-income children visit the dentist less frequently. This is why it's important to have programs like the Ostrow School's that can reach out to these underserved kids.
