After Halloween, remember even babies need to see the dentist
Updated: 10/31/2012 6:58:59 PM

After Halloween, remember even babies need to see the dentist This Halloween, many people took their babies out for their first trick or treating experience. While parents were rushing around trying to come up with the perfect costume for their little ones, they hopefully also took the time to schedule their baby his or her first appointment with a dental health professional.

Some parents mistakenly believe that they don't have to worry about their baby's dental health until he or she has some teeth, but that's not true. It's never too early to care for a baby's mouth and gums. After a baby eats, parents should gently wipe his gums with a clean, soft cloth. Also, a baby should be taken to the dentist by age 1, or when their first tooth appears.

"Pediatric dentists see the consequences all too often of parents and children not having established a dental home by age one," said Sean Cook, D.D.S., M.S.D., of the Indiana Society of Pediatric Dentistry. "Prevention, such as going to the dentist at an early age, is the key to healthy teeth."

Parents should talk to their dentists for more tips on how to start their baby on the path to a lifetime of dental health.
