It's important for individuals to understand that dental health is associated with a number of conditions that extend beyond the mouth. For example, according to the American Diabetes Association, people with diabetes have an increased risk of experiencing gum disease, because they are more prone to infection. Furthermore, studies have suggested that poor dental care habits may contribute to the development of this disease.
Recently, the Times-Herald Record, a New York news source, reported on a charity walk that took place in Warwick, N.Y., to raise awareness of diabetes. Vip Patel, D.D.S., of Warwick Valley Dental, was one of the sponsors of this walk, and he spoke to the news source about how diabetes and dental health are connected.
"Like all infections, serious gum disease may be a factor in causing blood sugar to rise and may make diabetes harder to control, which is why we urge diabetics to pay special attention to their overall oral health and maintain a regimen of professional teeth cleanings," said Patel, quoted by the Record.
Diabetics should regularly visit the dentist to check for early signs of dental disease.
