Is dental health associated with the colon?
March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and James Bramson, D.D.S. has taken this time to stress the role that oral health can play in colon health. Studies have already shown that taking care of dental health may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, and now research is suggesting that oral care can be associated with colon health as well.
"A recent study of 35,000 people in England revealed that the bacteria responsible for gum disease could be a 'pre-curser' for the development of colon cancer," said Bramson. "While more research is needed to determine the extent of any association between the two, the research suggests the bacteria could play a role."
According to Bramson, this study is another example of how oral health is associated to overall wellbeing. It's important to brush, floss and visit the dentist regularly in order to keep the bacteria in the mouth under control.
Bramson added that gum disease has been associated with heart disease, stroke, diabetes and premature or low birth weight infants.
