Find The Right Dentist For You
A person's dental health can be largely based on their lifestyle habits. This includes whether they smoke, how often they brush and the foods they eat. According to the American Dental Association, foods that contain any kind of sugar may harm teeth, and if a person is not getting the right nutrients, then his or her body may not be able to readily fight off tooth infections.
With lifestyle habits playing such a large role in a person's oral health, it's important for dentists to take the time to learn about their patients. Recently, the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) came out in support of a panel of government advisers who recommended that dentists take every opportunity to discuss a patient's lifestyle.
"Taking the time out to discuss a patient's smoking habit, alcohol consumption levels or poor diet could save lives, as all of those are associated with the risk of developing mouth cancer," said chief executive of the foundation, Nigel Carter, D.D.S.
Carter added that finding out a patient does not brush for at least two minutes at a time, twice a day could better allow dentists to help individuals avoid developing tooth decay or gum disease.
