From September 12 to 16, a number of children from economically disadvantaged families in Columbus, Ohio will be eligible to receive discounted dental and oral health care. This offer will be managed by the East Central District Health Department (ECDHD), as part of Good Neighbor Community Health Clinic Pediatric Dental Week, according to the Columbus Telegram.
The news source reports that approximately 180 children, ranging in age from infancy to 17 years old, will meet the financial hardship requirements necessary to receive discounted dental check-ups and exams.
Children with special needs are also to be welcome at the ECDHD for these dental hygiene services, which will be supplied by four pediatric dental residents from the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Officials behind the planned dental care event, such as Susan M. Alexander, D.D.S., took care to emphasize its benefits, particularly in light of the difficulties in providing care to those who are less fortunate.
"Public health departments serve the most vulnerable populations and this includes children and early childhood decay," Alexander told the news source. "We see the 20 percent of children that have 80 percent of the decay."
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research states that nearly half of all children in the U.S. between ages 2 and 5 have never visited the dentist before.
