Many people skip brushing their teeth at night, survey shows
Updated: 6/8/2011 5:00:00 PM

Some people skip brushing their teeth before bed, but dentists say this will likely lead to cavities The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that individuals brush their teeth at least two times daily. However, some research has shown that nighttime cleanings are especially important, since bacteria are most likely to replicate and cause damage to the teeth while people are sleeping.

Recently, a survey conducted by the British Dental Health Foundation found that many people skip brushing their teeth before bed, in spite of these warnings. The poll's results showed that 47 percent of respondents regularly skip this nighttime ritual, Medical News Today reported.

"Anyone who regularly skips brushing their teeth - morning or night-time - is storing up oral health problems for the future such as tooth decay and gum disease - the biggest cause of tooth loss often resulting in the need for bridges, dentures or implants," said Nigel Carter, the foundation's chief executive, quoted by the news source.

In addition to brushing, the ADA suggests that individuals use antimicrobial mouth rinses to help reduce the amount of bacteria in their mouths and stop these pathogens from forming dental plaque, which can cause gingivitis.
