As part of the celebration of National Smile Month during the first weeks in June, the British Dental Health Foundation recently conducted a survey to uncover what toothbrushes are used for other than cleaning teeth, according to an article published by the Midweek Herald.
More than 1,000 people responded to the question of what they use their toothbrushes for after these devices have become too worn out to promote good oral health, the newspaper reported.
The poll's results showed that four out of every five respondents make use of their old brushes for non-dental purposes. Specifically, four out of 10 surveytakers indicated that they found toothbrushes to be handy for cleaning between bathroom floor tiles, while 28 percent said they used them to scrub kitchen appliances, the news provider explained.
The findings also showed that people over the age of 75 were three times more likely to use toothbrushes for tasks other than cleaning their teeth than young adults between the ages of 16 and 34.
Some other unique responses included using toothbrushes for combing eyebrows, painting and cleaning cars and birdcages, the news source said.
The American Dental Association recommends that individuals replace their regular toothbrushes about every three months.
