How flossing teeth benefits a person's health
Updated: 4/20/2011 5:00:07 PM

Regular flossing may provide more health benefits than some people would expect In light of April being Oral Health Awareness Month, StaiNo, a manufacturer of oral hygiene products, recently highlighted some interesting facts about how dental floss may benefit an individual's health.

According to the company, people who regularly floss their teeth may live more than six years longer than those who do not use the interdental cleaners. This may be because bacteria that is left in the mouth can cause periodontal disease or plague a person's blood, which can cause arteries to become inflamed. Swelling of these vessels has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Brushing teeth but not flossing them is comparable to washing only 65 of the body. This means that individuals who do not use dental tape remove less than 70 percent of leftover food particles from their mouths through brushing alone.

Many people who suffer from bad breath use mint-flavored mouthwashes to mask the foul odor. However, a total of 90 percent of all halitosis cases are due to oral bacteria, which can be removed by flossing.

Professional cleanings during which dentists remove plaque buildup from patients' teeth may also provide benefits similar to those of flossing.
