Find The Right Dentist For You
As part of an ongoing project, dental residents and students enrolled in Nova Southeastern University's (NSU) dental program will use part of a three-year grant to provide oral care for domestic abuse victims. The money was given to the school from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, accounting for a total of $850,000.
Patients - who otherwise may not have access to dental care - will now be able to receive examinations, restorations, dentures and other preventive services. The free treatments will be administered at The Lodge, Women in Distress and the Broward Addiction Recovery Center in Florida. Children of the victims will also be able to receive care.
More than 100 women and children have already been treated by the NSU students and dental residents. By next June, the funding is expected to service another 200 women.
According to Women's Aid, one in four females will be abused during their lifetime. Stephen Abel, assistant dean at NSU, said that domestic violence victims face many challenges, including having to find dental care.
Fortunately, there are low-cost ways that women can find affordable dental coverage for themselves and their children.
