One of the main goals of periodontal treatment is to regenerate gum tissue that has been lost due to periodontitis, also known as gum disease. A recent article published in Journal of Dental Research highlights a new treatment that scientists are using to combat this problem.
Researchers from Osaka University's Graduate School of Dentistry in Japan conducted a clinical trial to examine how safe and effective fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) is in treating gum disease.
More than 250 adults who suffer from periodontitis took part in the study in which surgery was performed. Each of the subjects received one of three different doses of FGF-2 during the procedure.
While there were significant improvements in bone fill each time the participants received a dose of FGF-2, the mid-dose group exhibited the best results.
William Giannobile, of the study's investigators, said that this approach "has important ramifications in the treating of localized bone defects around teeth resulting from periodontal disease."
Up to 12 percent of American adults suffer from an advanced stage of gum disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Individuals who are looking for low-cost periodontal treatments could find affordable coverage for themselves and their families.
