Orange County in North Carolina will lose out on thousands of dollars which partly go toward programs that help to reduce oral health problems among elementary students, The Daily Tar Heel reports.
The funds provided dental screenings for young children who attend public schools in the county. The various age groups that were provided this service included kindergarten, second, fourth and fifth graders.
Wendy Schwade, the county's public health dental hygienist, told the newspaper that this program was used to "identify children who were in need - who had dental decay - and alert the parents." She added that they will no longer be able to estimate the number of those who need better oral care .
According to the news source, the public health's oral division will cut eight positions. Rebecca King, chief of the oral health section, told the newspaper that dentistry services will now be reduced by nearly 20 percent of what it once was.
Untreated dental problems can cause children to have pain, difficulty concentrating or miss school, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
