Tooth decay is a problem for any demographic, but children have particularly high rates of cavities, prompting dentists across the country to lend a hand to raise awareness and provide treatment for less fortunate children.
The Give Kids a Smile program helps organize many dental health events for children, which dentists say are important for increasing access to oral healthcare.
Dr John Hennette of Indiana told the Greencastle Banner-Graphic that his office would host one such event at his office this Friday, providing examinations, cleanings, x-rays, and fillings to children in need of dental care who have no insurance.
"Many children enrolled in Medicaid receive no dental services throughout the year," he told the news source. "With Give Kids a Smile, we can help some children get the dental care they need."
He added that, while the program would help, no single event could replace quality oral care throughout the year.
Government statistics show that 22.9 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 19 have some form of untreated dental decay.
