On February 5, as part of the Give Kids a Smile program, the Armstrong Atlantic State University Dental Hygiene Clinic in Savannah, Georgia provided free dental care services to children in need.
Despite terrible weather conditions, nearly 250 children showed up to take advantage of the one-day annual event, according to the Savannah Morning News. AASU students and faculty provided free cleanings and preventative dental care services to local children with no dental insurance.
"This event has taught me that you can never give too much," said student volunteer Donnisha Humphries. "I used to work at a children's clinic so I was aware of the need for children's dental care."
Unfortunately for children in the Peach State, a recent report from the Pew Center for the States has given Georgia a C grade for their state-sponsored dental health programs.
Georgia does not reimburse primary care physicians for preventative dental care and has restrictive regulations for hygienists. The state did not receive a failing grade because 96 percent of the population has access to fluoridated water.
Families who are looking to save money on dental care may want to look into discount dental plans, which can save 10 to 60 percent on most dental procedures.
