Most people understand the importance of regular dental checkups, but individuals living in 14 American cities seem to have been skimping on these visits.
A recent list of Worst Teeth Cities published by Totalbeauty.com named and shamed those who have not been attending to their dental care. Surprisingly, Las Vegas came in tenth place, despite being well-known for displays of glitz and glamour.
Baton Rouge, Louisiana, came in fifth, but the worst offender was Biloxi, Mississippi. According to the news source, this is the 49th worst state for fruit and vegetable consumption and the last in dental visits, ranking lower than Puerto Rico and Washington DC.
Improper dental care and avoiding visits to the dentist can lead to a whole host of problems, the American Dental Association explains. Poor brushing and flossing practices can lead to a buildup of plaque - the sticky film in which bacteria reside - and eventually tooth decay.
Those who do not visit their dentist are also at risk for developing periodontal problems that can start as sensitive and bleeding gums and lead to tooth loss.
