Times are tough for many, particularly when it comes to paying for dental care, but one New Jersey resident may have started a trend by bartering his skills for a checkup.
Media sources report that Robert Josefs of Hillsborough chose to trade his services for the dental work he couldn't afford. Instead of writing a check, he paid his dentist back in web design work, making up for his bill that was reportedly around $1,000.
There's even a website in existence called barternews.com, where users can find advice, help and contacts to swap skills for things they need.
While the concept seems a bit dated, at least it means some like Josefs are actually visiting the dentist.
The American Dental Association encourages adults to get regular dental checkups and to try and take children as well before they return to school.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, almost 51 million school hours are lost each year due to children missing school with dental problems or emergencies.
